The Youth Crew is for students in Grades 9 to 12 who want to earn volunteer hours or support their local library.

Youth Crew meets every Tuesday from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Bracebridge Library. No registration is required.

The Visiting Library Service is a free service for some patrons who may be unable to visit the Bracebridge Library in person.

Patrons may request items such as books, audiobooks, DVDs, and magazines, among other materials. They will be delivered to their home at a pre-arranged time.

Staff who help with deliveries are required to undergo a security screening.

Celebrate International Day of Human Space Flight

April 12 is the International Day of Human Space Flight. It marks the day that the very first person was launched into space. Hundreds of people since then have explored the final frontier, including Canadians like Roberta L. Bondar and Chris Hadfield.

There are tons of ways that you can explore space from home with the Bracebridge Library. Read on for our list of cool things to borrow, books, and online resources to learn all about outer space and astronauts. We’ve also included a bonus Chris Hadfield reading list!


Cool Things to Borrow Collection

Orion Telescope

The Bracebridge Library has a telescope that can be borrowed by an adult with a Bracebridge Library card. Take the telescope home for one week to check out the night sky. The telescope comes with instructions, a flashlight, and a guide to constellations.

Juvenile Non-Fiction Books: Stargazing

Young readers will love to learn about space with these great books! 1,000 Facts About Space by Dean Regas is full of interesting information and even photographs from outer space! The Amazing Night Sky Atlas: The Ultimate Stargazing Guide by Nancy Dickmann has a mix of photos, images, facts, and tips to get young readers started learning about astronomy. Stargazing for Kids: an Introduction to Astronomy by Jonathan Poppele will teach children about the most popular constellations and how to find them!

Juvenile Non-Fiction Books: Astronauts

Aspiring astronauts can learn all about life in outer space with these great reads. Astronaut Handbook by Meghan McCarthy is full of graphics and images for young readers. Behind the Scenes at the Space Station gives a behind-the-scenes tour of the International Space Station. My Journey to the Stars by Scott Kelly is a picture book by the astronaut who was a pilot on Discovery, worked on the Hubble Telescope, and even commanded the International Space Station!

Adult Non-Fiction Books & Magazines

There are so many ways to learn about space. How Space Works: the Facts Visually Explained by DK Publishing is full of information and graphics to explain everything you ever wanted to know about space. Once Upon a Time I Lived on Mars: Space, Exploration, and Life on Earth by Kate Greene is a collection of essays inspired by Greene’s experience at HI-SEAS – NASA’s first simulated Martian habitat. SkyNews magazine by The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada has the latest space news and discoveries.
